Sea turtles have been swimming the world's oceans since before the dinosaurs roamed the earth, more than 110 million years ago. But these ancient mariners are now on the brink of extinction. All six turtle species that swim in U.S. waters are listed by the U.S. government as "threatened" or "endangered" under the Endangered Species Act.

Human activities have driven global sea turtle populations to dangerously low levels. "Dirty fishing" by commercial fishing operations is one of the greatest threats to sea turtle survival.
