On November 15, 2007, Oceana and the Center for Biological Diversity petitioned the federal government asking it to uplist loggerhead sea turtles from "threatened" to "endangered" under the Endangered Species Act and to protect the key habitat areas for these sea turtles from human impacts. Currently, the loggerhead is listed as threatened and does not have any critical habitat designated for protection under the Endangered Species Act. As demonstrated by the examples below, there are numerous locations along the Atlantic coast that are key habitat areas for this species and they need to be protected.

Florida: Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge
Georgia: Cumberland Island
South Carolina: Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge
North Carolina: Shelf Break off of Cape Hatteras
Mid-Atlantic: Chesapeake Bay
Mid-Atlantic: Delaware Bay
