If you or a friend has suffered from mercury poisoning, or are just concerned about this issue, please send a letter to the editor of your local paper. And let us know you did at mercury@oceana.org!
Here are two sample letters which can be tailored to each individual, or write your own!

Dear Editor,
Mercury pollution has gained growing attention in the media. A diet high in mercury-contaminated fish can cause severe neurological problems as well as heart attacks, infertility and possibly cancer.
Include a brief summary of the reason you are writing (personal experience, friend with mercury poisoning, just concerned, etc)
There is a major, over-looked source of mercury – chlorine plants that use out-dated technology. Mercury-free technology exists and is used by 90% of the US chlorine industry. It’s time to require the remaining nine plants to convert to mercury-free technology or shut down, removing a major source of mercury from our environment, our communities and our food.
Thank you.

Most people, however, do not know about the links between fish and mercury. They do not know that the US Food and Drug Administration has issued consumption advisories for some commercial fish. The FDA and our supermarkets need to do a better job of sharing this information with the public, by posting signs wherever fish is sold, to prevent more people from suffering as I have.
Thank you.
