There are only four U.S. chlorine factories left that haven't committed to stop using mercury. They use an outdated technology to manufacture chlorine that was developed back in 1894, even though modern technology is good for the environment and good for business.
Ninety percent of U.S. chlorine is manufactured using mercury-free technology and since Oceana started its campaign, a number of plants have committed to going mercury-free. Most recently, ERCO Worldwide announced on August 8, 2007 that it will switch its Port Edwards, WI chlorine plant, currently the largest mercury polluter in Wisconsin, to mercury-free technology by 2009.
