According to an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) scientist, one in six women in the U.S. has enough mercury in her body to risk neurological harm to her developing fetus.
If these women knew that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the EPA have warned women and children to avoid or limit consumption of certain types of seafood with high mercury content, they would be better equipped to protect their children.
Oceana is working to get the FDA mercury advice posted at grocery store seafood counters and tuna aisles so that consumers will have the information they need to make informed decisions. A number of stores, listed on our Green List, are now posting signs, but all stores should do so.
If your store isn't posting signs, email them now!
at A small number of chlorine plants in the U.S. are still using toxic mercury in their production processes -- putting mercury into the atmosphere that can find its way into our seafood. This contamination puts the health of all of us at risk.
