Oceana Mercury Solutions

Oceana has launched an international campaign to protect children, adults and marine life from mercury poisoning. Our campaign targets grocery stores and chlorine plants.

Whole Foods Sign

Grocery Store Campaign

Federal governments around the world have issued consumption warnings for certain types of fish but few people know exactly what those warnings say or which fish they should avoid.

Consumers have a right to know about mercury contamination in seafood so that they can make healthy choices about their diets and those of their families.

Our simple solution is be to post warning signs in the stores where the fish of concern are sold. Oceana has called on the major grocery chains to do just that.

Chlorine Plant Campaign

Phase out mercury-emitting chlorine production in the United States:

  • EPA should require all operating facilities to convert to mercury-free technology.
  • EPA should require any temporarily closed (idled) plants to shift to mercury-free technology before reopening.

  • Maintain European phase-out:
  • The European Union should require full compliance with the IPPC directive and the 2007 deadline to go mercury-free.
  • The requirement should stand for all current members of the EU and be a condition of becoming a member.

  • Ensure the safe disposal of mercury:
  • Mercury is a highly toxic substance. Chemical companies and governments should be responsible for the cleanup of the site once a plant has been converted or closed.
