On May 24, 2007 Andrew Sharpless, CEO of Oceana, and Dr. Rashid Sumaila, Director of the Fisheries Economic Research Unit at the University of British Columbia Fisheries Centre and co-author of Catching More Bait: A Bottom-up Re-estimation of Global Fisheries Subsidies, joined together to brief WTO delegates in Geneva on the state of the world's fisheries. Their presentations combine scientific and economic expertise to make a compelling argument about the dire state of the oceans and the need to take action to save them. Our oceans are at a tipping point, the most effective way to change course and salvage our fisheries is through the elimination of fisheries subsidies by the WTO.
