You may have noticed a recent flurry of news stories about mercury contamination. In the last month, Oceana and three other organizations, including the New York Times, have released the results of different tests showing that mercury levels in tuna sushi and other seafood can be extremely high.
In the wake of these results, fishing industry groups are urging people to eat more fish in spite of the risks of eating mercury-contaminated seafood. Oceana needs your help to convince the Food Marketing Institute, the grocery industry's trade group, to provide mercury warning signs to inform shoppers about mercury in fish!
Because fish contaminated with high levels of mercury may harm a young child or unborn baby's developing nervous system, the FDA has issued advice for women of child-bearing age and children to avoid or limit their consumption of certain types of fish. Without signs at the places where people buy seafood, this information doesn't reach all consumers.
In addition to signing the petition, you can increase your impact by getting lots of friends to sign. And you could win a $200 gift certificate for spreading the word!
As you know, many groups, including Oceana, have been calling on grocery companies to post signs at seafood counters to convey the Food and Drug Administration mercury advice. Many companies like Kroger, Safeway and Whole Foods have already begun posting signs. But most, as you know, have not.
I am writing to ask that FMI create a sign that conveys the FDA advice and distribute it to member companies so that that they too can make this important information available to their customers.
You are already most of the way there! Your brochure about mercury and fish already contains most of the information - too bad most shoppers don't have time to stop and read through a brochure. Just as you wouldn't advocate posting prices and sale notices in a series of brochures, this important health information also needs to be visible in the form of a sign so that shoppers can refer to it while they choose which seafood to buy.
Please develop a sign conveying the FDA mercury advice and distribute it to your member companies. You will be doing them a service by helping them better serve their customers.
