Aquariums throughout Europe continue celebrating European Sahrk Week with children and adults.

ASOCIACIÓN IBÉRICA DE ZOOS Y ACUARIOS

  • Poster.
  • Drawing competition called “What is a shark to you?” Children aged 6-12 can participate. Winners will receive a family entrance to any of the participating centres of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

THE OCEANOGRÀFIC OF THE CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES IN VALENCIA

  • The Oceanogràfic in Valencia is happy to participate in numerous Shark Week events, from educational chats with real shark displays (eggs, teeth, jaws, etc.) to special shark feedings to helping gather signatures in a campaign for stronger EU shark policies. There will also be special educational and recreational activities related to shark conservation throughout the week.
  • Ever wanted to sleep with sharks? As part of shark week you can! The Oceanogràfic in Valencia is holding a special “sleeping with sharks” event on the night of 16 October for a group of school children.
  • The Valencia Oceanogràfic is also joining other aquariums throughout Spain in a drawing competition called “What is a shark to you?” Children aged 6-12 can participate. Winners will receive a family entrance to any of the participating centres of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

GIJÓN AQUARIUM

  • Shark Week materials will be displayed in the entrance hall of the new Gijón Aquarium. Throughout the week, educational chats on sharks will be held, including examples of shark teeth, fins, eggs, etc. Other recreational and educational activities will be held regarding sharks and the threats they face.
  • Special merchandising items with the slogan “Stop Finning” will also be given out during Shark Week, including fin-hats, stickers, and balloons.
  • The Gijón aquarium is also joining other aquariums throughout Spain in a drawing competition called “What is a shark to you?” Children aged 6-12 can participate. Winners will receive a family entrance to any of the participating centres of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

ZOO AQUARIUM IN MADRID

  • Ever wanted to sleep with sharks? As part of shark week you can! Madrid aquarium is holding a special event for children ages 8-14 on Thursday, 11 October beginning at 20:30. Children spend the night at the aquarium and learn more about sharks through games, quizzes, workshops, etc.
  • There are also educational chats with a focus on sharks at 16:00 every day from 8-14 October. On Tuesday 9 October and Thursday 11 October the chat will coincide with shark feeding time.
  • The Madrid Aquarium is also joining other aquariums throughout Spain in a drawing competition called “What is a shark to you?” Children aged 6-12 can participate. Winners will receive a family entrance to any of the participating centres of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

L'AQUÀRIUM IN BARCELONA

  • There will be a special emphasis on sharks during all of the activities for families at the Barcelona aquarium during Shark Week, including workshops, celebrations, shark sleepovers, and visits to the technical areas.
  • All of the families that pass through the Barcelona aquarium will be treated to a special poster identifying Mediterranean shark species (limited to 2,000 posters). This poster will also be given out to all schoolchildren that visit the aquarium during Shark Week. There are a total of 60 classes and 1,500 children scheduled to visit the aquarium during this week.
  • Additionally, all visitors to the Barcelona aquarium will receive the Shark Week materials produced by the Shark Alliance, and there will be a special communication on their website to commemorate the celebration.

SAN SEBASTIÁN AQUARIUM

  • All school children that visit the aquarium in San Sebastian during Shark Week will be treated to a special shark-focused visit. The visits will include explanations on shark characteristics, threats, etc., and end with the projection of a BBC documentary on sharks. This same film will be shown to the general public throughout the week.
  • On 11 October at 18:00, there will be a special chat by aquarium enthusiast Victor Argüelles. The chat is open to the public.
  • There will be a special guided visit by an aquarium worker through the aquarium’s shark exhibit and technical areas, revealing the internal installations and detailing information on shark care, feeding, capture, etc. Participation is limited to 15 visitors. Contact the San Sebastian aquarium for more information and to enrol.
  • The San Sebastian aquarium is also joining other aquariums throughout Spain in a drawing competition called “What is a shark to you?” Children aged 6-12 can participate. Winners will receive a family entrance to any of the participating centres of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

A CORUÑA AQUARIUM

  • At the Aquarium Finisterrae in A Coruña, visitors will be treated to a special educational guidebook on sharks produced by the aquarium.
  • The A Coruña aquarium is also joining other aquariums throughout Spain in a drawing competition called “What is a shark to you?” Children aged 6-12 can participate. Winners will receive a family entrance to any of the participating centres of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
 

A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT ILLEGAL DRIFTNETS

Oceana in the documentary made by the producer EarthOcean about illegal drifnetters in the Mediterranean Sea. The video includes an interview with Xavier Pastor, Oceana’s Director for Europe, and also images of illegal driftnetters recorded during the expeditions on board the catamaran Oceana Ranger. Driftnets are banned since 2002 because they represent a major threat for the conservation of endangered species such as marine turtles and cetaceans.
