OCEANA CALLS FOR SWORDFISH MANAGEMENT BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE
Driftnets, illegal fishing nets used by over 500 vessels in the Mediterranean, catch 20% of the reported swordfish catch. The swordfish fishery in the Mediterranean is not subject to quotas or any single minimum size rule. Between 50 and 70% of the catch is comprised of juveniles.

OCEANA WELCOMES EU FISH COUNCIL CONCLUSIONS URGING QUICK ACTION FOR SHARK CONSERVATION IN EUROPE
EU Fisheries Ministers emphasised the need for immediate action to protect sharks and prioritised strengthening the shark finning regulation.

The EU Fisheries Council meeting today in Luxembourg has adopted the Council Conclusions on the EU Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks. Oceana, the international marine conservation organisation, supports the statement of the EU Fisheries Ministers, which endorses the Plan while also urging it is implemented without delay.

PORTUGUESE MAN-OF-WAR SEEN IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
Various specimens of Portuguese Man-of-War have been seen close to the coast of Murcia in recent days. This species, more common in the Atlantic Ocean, has reached the waters of the Spanish Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar pushed by air currents.
