ZOEA Marine and Environment Research Dissemination, specialises in the field on the marine environment.

Its primary objective is the rational use of marine resources from a triple perspective: research, management and dissemination.

Since its foundation in 1994, its multidisciplinary team of professionals has been undertaking studies on the marine environment, research work, video and audio productions and scuba-diving training.

 

MarViva promotes the establishment and safeguarding of protected marine areas around the islands and coastal areas of Latin America and the Caribbean, supporting compliance with the legislation governing these areas and encouraging effective change towards the more sustainable use of coastal and marine resources.

MarViva is pushing for the establishment of an effective presence in the waters of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Conservation Corridor and the MesoAmerican Reef System (SAM). MarViva is also the catalyst for different sectors of civil society to take on responsibility for more specific and effective actions for complying with the law and safeguarding protected areas.

 

The Friends of Cocos Island Foundation ( FAICO ) seeks to obtain and optimise the use of human, technical, scientific and financial resources to manage, protect, and conserve Cocos Island by means of stablishing strategic alliances with the business sector, national and international organisations and civil society, with the aim of preserving its biodiversity for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations, in a parallel and complementary venture to the one being undertaken by the Goverment on the Republic of Costa Rica and the international community.

The Foundation for the Protection and Conservation of Cayos Cochinos manages and administers the protected area of Cayos Cochinos ( Hog Islands ) in Honduras by means of different programmes such as the monitoring and survelliance of fishing activities in the area; the conservation of reefs and endemic species or those in danger of extinction; a research programme that has a fully-equipped scientific station for this purpose, and community development, which gets local people involved in conservation activities and implements sustainable development projects.

 

A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT ILLEGAL DRIFTNETS

Oceana in the documentary made by the producer EarthOcean about illegal drifnetters in the Mediterranean Sea. The video includes an interview with Xavier Pastor, Oceana’s Director for Europe, and also images of illegal driftnetters recorded during the expeditions on board the catamaran Oceana Ranger. Driftnets are banned since 2002 because they represent a major threat for the conservation of endangered species such as marine turtles and cetaceans.
