
On June 1st, the Oceana Ranger initiated its 2008 Expedition in Vigo, after having navigated in waters of the Alboran Sea, Gulf of Cádiz and Portugal. The itinerary will take the team of scientific and submarine photographers on board to investigate the Galician seabeds in front of Isla de Ons, Costa da Morte, Islas Sisargas and Ría de Ribadeo. They will also visit Asturian waters in front of Cabo de Peñas, Cudillero or Ribadesella, Bay of Biscay waters between Suances, Santander and Cabo de Ajo, and Basque waters of Cabo Matxitxako, Urdaibai, Mutriku and Cabo Higer, among others.
With the support of Fundación Biodiversidad, Oceana started this campaign with the objective of increase the knowledge on Spanish seabeds and promoting the creation of new protected areas.

A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT ILLEGAL DRIFTNETS
Oceana in the documentary made by the producer EarthOcean about illegal drifnetters in the Mediterranean Sea. The video includes an interview with Xavier Pastor, Oceana’s Director for Europe, and also images of illegal driftnetters recorded during the expeditions on board the catamaran Oceana Ranger. Driftnets are banned since 2002 because they represent a major threat for the conservation of endangered species such as marine turtles and cetaceans.
