Existing Prohibitions on Fishing for Krill

Recognizing the importance of krill as prey for many marine mammals, seabirds and fish, prohibitions on krill fishing have already been implemented in some regions.

• March 2006: PFMC bans commercial krill fishing in the EEZ. Click here to read the press release

• January 2005: Washington State made it unlawful to posses’ krill taken for commercial purposes.

• 2003: California and Oregon passed legislations prohibiting the commercial landing and sale of all krill species.

• 1998: The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Alaska Region and North Pacific Fishery Management Council banned directed fishing for “forage fish,” a complex of important prey species which includes all krill species.
